Galway, Ireland

Gaillimh, Éire

Daylight Savings Time

3/28/2019

FYI- For most of the days in the year, Ireland is 8 hours ahead of California. However, since the United States ends Daylight Savings Time on the 10th of March (this year), California springs forward, to be only 7 hours behind Ireland... that is, until the 31st of March, when Ireland springs back into its usual 8 hour lead, over Cali..

Euro vs. Dollar

If you are ever asked whether you'd like to be charged by Euro or Dollar, on your credit card purchases or ATM withdraws, choose Euro.  More times than not, this will give you a better rate, and more bang for your buck.

All weekend... especially today, is a massive celebration in Galway!  For those who want to see the parade, it starts at NUIG at 11:30, and will wind its way through town.  Enjoy the craic!

Pizza and beer are a perfect combination, and if you've never had a Dough Bros pizza, do so at O'Connell's Bar, at Eyre Square.... The beer garden is arguably the best in Galway!
Your taste buds will be completely satisfied!

Love me some Gaeilge...This

This is the Galway Fire Station.  Its sign is written in Gaeilge (Old Irish text, before the language was anglicized... like adding an 'h' after the 'm' in Gaillimh). As you can see in the picture, there is a dot over the m. That dot is called a buailte (pronounced, booallcha, with an emphasis on the 'u'). The reason for replacing the buailte with an 'h' was because of the advent of typewriters; there was no way to type a letter with a dot on the top... hence, the h's.
Only after the 'na' preceding Gaillim, does the 'e' appear at the end of the word. Irish is the third oldest language in the world,... very tricky! I've been studying it for two years... but, of course, I can't speak it... I'm still an infant. ;)

One minute it's a partly cloudy sky, the next... lashing wind and sleet.  I love the variety!
